Map data

The assistant of a hotel on Lobby Engine can tell guests about places around the hotel: restaurants, cafés, shops, a pharmacy, a hospital with an emergency department, bus stops, ports, beaches, parks, viewpoints, museums, sights and the nearest airport. This page says where that information comes from, under which licence, and how it is chosen.

Source and licence

The places come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors. OpenStreetMap data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0; see openstreetmap.org/copyright. We read it through the places service of Geoapify.

The places are not the hotel's own recommendations. A hotel can correct or remove any of them, and what the hotel itself says about a place always comes first.

How the places are chosen

For each hotel we find the hotel on the map, by its address or by its name in its town, or at the point the hotel set itself. Around that point we take, in each of these groups, the named places nearest to the hotel, and keep at most:

GroupUp toWithin
Restaurants51.2 km
Café, bar1 each1 km
Supermarkets21.5 km
Pharmacy, the nearest that is not marked as not dispensing medicine (named "Pharmacy" where the map gives no name)13 km
Hospital, only one with an emergency department125 km
Cash machine or bank (without the branch's opening hours), bus stop1 each1.5 km, 800 m
Ports (berths of one harbour count as one)210 km
Rental of cars, bikes or boats13 km
Beaches36 km
Park, viewpoint1 each2 km, 6 km
Museum, beyond 2 km only one with a Wikidata entry115 km
Sights, beyond 2 km only those with a Wikidata entry215 km
Airports with a code for flights (IATA) that the map does not mark as an airfield for sport or private flying, the second only when it is at most half as far again as the first2150 km

Among restaurants, cafés, bars, shops and rentals, a place whose opening hours are known comes first; among beaches, viewpoints, museums and sights, a place with a Wikidata entry comes first; otherwise the nearer place does. The pharmacy, the hospital, the cash machine, the bus stop, the ports, the beaches and the airports are left out when the hotel already names such a place itself; in the other groups a place the hotel names itself is not repeated.

What we keep of a place: its name (in English where the map has one), its kind, its distance from the hotel in a straight line rounded to 50 or 100 metres, its opening hours turned into words, its cuisine and its telephone number. Opening hours that cannot be read reliably are left out.

The map is looked at once for each hotel, again whenever the hotel asks, and once more after the hotel's website is read again if the hotel could not be found on the map before. A look the map does not answer is tried again later on its own. A later look updates the places it found before and removes those it no longer finds, unless the hotel has edited them. When the hotel can no longer be found on the map, the places measured from it are removed too. A place the hotel removed is not brought back.
